The Ghana Health Service says it has launched an administrative investigation into the theft of some Covid-19 vaccines by three health professionals in the Greater Accra region.

In a press release, GHS not only condemned the alleged act, but also promised to ensure appropriate penalties are imposed on the perpetrators if found guilty.

“The department condemns such an alleged criminal act in unambiguous terms. It conducts administrative investigations and applies appropriate penalties if found guilty, and the agency is committed to cooperating with the security services to uncover the circumstances that led to this unlawful act.”

This comes after National Security arrested three people for their alleged involvement in the theft and sale of the Ghana government’s COVISHIELD vaccines.

Disease Control Officer at Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Stephen Desicino, 37, is said to have stolen 36 vials of COVIDSHIELD and La Bawalashie Polyclinic Disease Control Officer, Lord Papeete, who is now at large, also stole 26. vials of COVIDSHIELD.

Cosmos Aloti, the 42-year-old Occupational Health and Safety Officer, is said to have received the stolen COVIDSHIELD from Papeete and Desicino.

Allotey allegedly administered the vaccines at a cost of GH of 200.00 per dose.

Joseph Knight Jesse, a project assistant and former laboratory technician at Greater Accra Regional Hospital, has also been detained on charges of inciting the crime.

The service assured the Ghanaians that the vaccines are not for sale, adding that citizens must report anyone trying to sell a vaccine to them.
